INTERMODAL COMPLIANCE
UIIA Carriers at the Port of Los Angeles / Long Beach
Finding UIIA-registered drayage carriers at the Port of Los Angeles / Long Beach is a critical first step for any freight forwarder or shipper managing container pickups at this terminal. UIIA (Uniform Intermodal Interchange Agreement) membership is the standard credential that authorizes a carrier to access shared chassis pools at US container terminals. Without it, a carrier cannot efficiently pick up your container at the gate.
Why UIIA Matters at This Port
At the Port of Los Angeles / Long Beach, nearly all chassis are managed through the UIIA pool. Carriers without active enrollment must arrange alternative chassis access — a slower, more expensive workaround that introduces pickup delays. Specifying UIIA-registered carriers before booking eliminates this risk at the gate.
California Compliance Requirements
- CARB Clean Truck Standards: Engines must meet 2010 model-year emission standards or newer. Older trucks are prohibited from operating at LA/LB terminals.
- UIIA Membership: Required for access to the shared chassis pools operated at the port complex. Most terminals will not release containers without a valid UIIA agreement.
- Clean Truck Program Registration: Trucks must be registered with the Port's Clean Trucks Program and display a valid green sticker.
- AB5 Awareness: California's AB5 law affects driver classification. Carriers operating at LA/LB should have documented compliance status.
