Last Free Day (LFD)
The final day a container can remain at a terminal without incurring demurrage charges, as defined by the ocean carrier's tariff.
The Last Free Day (LFD) is the specific calendar date by which a container must be picked up from a terminal before demurrage charges begin. It is calculated by adding the ocean carrier's free time allowance (typically 3–5 days) to the vessel discharge date. For example: if a vessel discharges on May 1st and the shipping line grants 4 days of free time, the LFD is May 5th. If the container is still on the terminal on May 6th, demurrage begins.
Tracking LFDs is one of the most time-sensitive tasks in import logistics. Multiple LFDs across different containers, different shipping lines (each with their own tariff), and different terminals can create a complex daily prioritization challenge for freight brokers and logistics managers. Many TMS (Transportation Management System) platforms now include LFD tracking and alert features.
From a drayage carrier selection standpoint, LFD urgency directly affects which carrier you call first. Carriers with strong terminal appointment availability, flexible operating hours, and a reputation for first-available dispatch are more valuable when you have containers approaching their LFD. DrayLocator lists carrier contact information, operating hours, and verified status to help you reach qualified carriers quickly when time is short.
